Ampcat's Gear (Amps)
Brown Extension Cabinet
Now this is a treat - A 60's Fender Extension cabinet, 100% original. I had never heard of one of these, much less seen one, until recently. I found it at a small music shop called Muzik-Muzik in El Cajon (east San Diego). I went home and tried to look it up, but there's no mention of it in the Fender Amp Book. I talked to a few people about it, and while apparently Fender made these, they were not identified as Fender anywhere on the cabinet.
I made the guy give me a screwdriver so I could open it up (the back panel has about 10 brass screws), just to make sure everything was in order - it's got a 10" speaker, and it appears to be a CTS. The cabinet is roughly 13" high, and the width is exacly that of a brown Deluxe, which makes me wonder - is this an extension cabinet for a Princeton or a Deluxe? The speaker size would suggest it was designed for a Princeton, but the cabinet size suggests it is for a Deluxe, and I haven't found anyone who can provide me with compelling evidence either way. I thought peerhaps the speaker resistance would give me a clue, but it is an extension cabinet, and the resitance rating for the Extension Speaker on both the Princeton & Deluxe models of this period was identical. Oh well, I may never know...
A couple interesting things about this cabinet:
1. The handle is the black rubber type - why they chose black is beyond me (they actually did this on a number of brown Fender amps), especially when the brown handles existed, but there it is.
2. The 1/4" jack is in the bottom of the cabinet, right in the middle (it's actually on the side of the cabinet, but I know technically the bottom because that's where the feet are) It seems designed for the Fender right-angle 1/4" plug.
3. The back panel of the cabinet is identical to the front panel. At first I thought it was just a ported cabinet until I took it apart - for the rear panel, they actually used a panel that was cut & drilled for a speaker - it has a 10' hole with mounting-screw holes drilled around it in the same pattern as the front panel.
