Ampcat's Gear (Amps)
The Princetoad
A while back I got the idea that I wanted to build tube amps. At first I wanted to design one, but once I realized the complexity of tube electronics, I decided that I would be happy just to build one from scratch. The whole story of the Princetoad can be found in the Projects section, so I won't go into a whole lot of detail here. The short story is that I didn't want to butcher a perfectly good amp, and building a new amp from all new materials cost WAY too much, so I found a vintage amp that someone else had already destroyed, and used that as my starting point. In the long run I saved quite alot of money on transformers, chassis & cabinet - everything else I replaced with NOS - even the caps & resistors.
The schematic for this amplifier can be found in our Amplifiers section, under Schematics.
Specs:
Controls (left to right): Volume, Tone, Speed, Intensity
Tubes: 5Y3 (Rectifier), 6V6GT (Power), 7025/12AX7 (Preamp), 7025/12AX7 (Effect/Tremelo)
Speaker: This speaker was with the amp when I got it, but it's not original - it's a '60's Jensen P12-R - a damn fine speaker, very nice bass response, but the Princeton came with a 10" speaker, not a 12"
Cabinet: This is the cabinet that came with the amp, but it is not original - it's a replacement (looks like it was done in the 70's). The cabinet is exactly 1" taller than a stock cabinet, this is to accomodate a 12" speaker
