Ampcat's Gear (Amps)
Brown Princeton
I found this gem in an unlikely place - eBay.com. It was this first high-priced item I had ever purchased on eBay, and I was REALLY nervous about the transaction - the guy was in Florida, he didn't want to use an escrow service, and the price was pretty high - around $750. I know you can get brown Princetons for less money, but there are two other factors to consider:
1. Condition - sure, you can pay less, but most small amps this old are in pretty sorry shape.
2. Availability - my friends told me to wait & buy one for less in a shop, but WHAT shop? I haven't found a single good shop in the bay area for buying vintage amps (in good condition - the closest thing was Black Market Music in San Francisco, but most of their amps were trashed).
Until the purchase of my Brown Pro, this was my favorite amp - it still is for a good, overdriven sound, but it just doesn't have the low end that the pro does (well, it is only a 10" speaker). This amp can be heard in all it's glory on a cover of Life's Been Good I did with a group of friends called The Ugly Ones. The amp really shines during the solo - best fucking tone I've ever gotten on record (by the way, that's Jay Harper and the Small Bus Singers on vocals.... :).
Nothing all that interesting about this amp - it's 100% stock - only the handle has been replaced.
