Ampcat's Gear (Amps)
Brownface Pro
If I had to be stranded on a desert island, and I could only have one amp and one guitar, I would take the Toad Guitar and my brownface Fender Pro. This amp is without a doubt the finest amplifier ever manufactured, PERIOD. Unlike most brownface Fenders, it has treble to spare - combined with INCREDIBLE bass response (15" speaker, you know), this amp kicks maximum ass. It sounds great with every single guitar I own - Fenders, Gibsons, EVERYTHING.
I found this amp at a small music shop called Muzik-Muzik in El Cajon (east San Diego). It was underneath a large system of shelves, behind a number of smaller amplifiers. I asked the guy about it, and he said he'd had it for years - normally I can spot bullshit a mile away, but the perfect condition & the even layer of dust told me he was on the level. The only thing that is even remotely suspect is the grill cloth - it looks brand new, but SO DOES THE REST OF THE AMP!!!! In fact, if I wasn't familiar with brownface Fenders (I own a couple others), I really would have thought that the tolex had been replaced. But it hasn't, and I don't believe the grill cloth has been either.
As an added bonus, it came with good tubes - every 12AX7 is an NOS GE - not the best, but still a very fine tube. The only exception(s) were the power tubes - an unmatched set of 6L6GT; one was a Amperex, one was a Groove Tube. I'll be replacing them with something of slightly better quality - perhaps a set of NOS JAN Philips 6L6WGB. 40 watts is a loud amp, and the 6L6WGB has less headroom (meaning a lower threshold for the plate volume), so they should break up at lower volumes.
The best thing about this amp is the Tremelo. It utilizes a complex circuit design, and it's commonly refered to as a "Harmonic Vibrato". I'm honestly not sure how it works, but it is an amazing effect - it sounds less like a vibrato and more like a combination wah/volume pedal - it's a strange effect, not unlike an envelope filter, only much more regular. The lowest speed setting is still pretty fast, so I'm considering replacing the speed pot with a higher resistance pot to make it slower.
