Faythe, Nature, Guitars

I recently got the urge to shoot portraits (well, not traditional portraits) after I ran across an online photo contest. Not too long before, I had a disagreement with a buddy of mine over whether or not photography was "pure art". I maintained that it was not, since it relied on so much technology and automated processes. I was wrong. I shot 5 rolls of film during this session, and only 4 or 5 came out really good - another 20 (pictured below) are just ok (the rest went in the trash :). I believe my 2 major obstacles are 1) I don't know dick about lighting, and 2) taking pictures is REALLY hard. The only really engouraging thing is that I had deliberately used high speed film in low light to get a particular effect and it worked pretty much as I predicted, with the foreground being high contrast with smooth gradients, and the background is completely washed out.

These are shots of my friend Faythe from work - she's a real sport, I didn't even have to pay her :)
