I needed a project, so I decided to make a distortion pedal for my friend Doug. This basically consisted of two things: 1) making a diagram of the circuit, and 2) actually constructing the pedal.
Making the diagram was the easy part. identify the circuit path and component values. Rather than make a schematic, I actually drew out where everything connected to everything else. Making the pedal wasn't so easy.
Getting the parts
Fry's Electronics is great - you can get nearly every single component to make an effect pedal there. Here's a list of the things I bought:
Metal effect box (like the old MXR pedals)
Hookup wire
Capacitors
Resistors
Stomp switch
9 Volt battery clip
9 Volt battery connector
Transistor
Assembling the parts
